Understanding time and space in rhythmic structures can be challenging whether  we are experienced drummers or newer to the drum.  The space between the notes is the shortcut to “groove”, but we can’t manipulate or logic it into happening. The time or tempo brings another quality into playing—stimulating or soothing, cacophonous or synchronized.During our time together will investigate and experience how feeling in music is enhanced by enjoying and delighting in the spaces between the notes as much as the events of the notes themselves. We will see how certain tempos are ideal for some rhythms and not others.Be prepared to play simple rhythms, and experience how they can create cacophony or chorus, randomness or orchestration. Please bring a bungee cord or drum strap to be able to attach your drum to a chair.

This workshop will cover:
•   the drum as an energetic instrument–increasing well-being and vitality
•   the joy of singing and playing the drum
•   the power of learning cooperatively–listening and playing together
•   technique exercises for clearer, faster playing
•   complex rhythmic patterns
•   body rhythms and rhythmic meditations
•   deconstructing the 12/8 clave with additive and divisive 8

The power of drumming is an art, a means of communication and healing, and a way to bring harmony to community. Zorina teaches drumming as her teachers (primarily Babatunde Olatunji) have taught her. The drum teaching is both oral and aural. Students sing/say the Yoruba sounds of the drum, and as we sing/say the melody of “notes,” playing the drum follows easily. The rhythms are songs that become internalized, circumventing the need for prior musical training. We also believe in the power of understanding the rhythmic “houses” or “structures” that we can build and play within, and developing our own chants to sing within them. More about Bolo:

Bolokada Conde is true Master Djembefola (master drummer), expert of Malinke Rhythms and one of world’s best djembe players. Bolokada was a young musical prodigy who became a sensation in the Sankaran region of Guinea, West Africa. As a master folklorist, he was the premier djembe player in all the major village celebrations in the region for many years. Bolokada joined the world famous Les Percussion du Guinee to replace the legendary Mamoudy Keita as their lead drummer. He traveled and performed in major performance venues all over the world since 1996 and was featured in the IMAX movie PULSE: a Stomp Odyssey. Since 2004, he has been performing and teaching in the United States. He is the musical director and lead soloist of Ballet Waraba in North Carolina, Ballet Wassa-Wassa in Santa Cruz, California and Les Percussion Malinke in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has conducted percussion workshop all over the US and Europe. He has released four musical CD’s including Morowaya, Sankaran, Djiraworo, and Famille Dundunba, and is the subject of a documentary “Bolokada Conde- Malinke Village Djembefola”. Condé is an Artist Associate at the Robert E. Brown Center For World Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, having previously been a visiting lecturer/teacher from 2008 to 2011. Mamady Keita, the best known djembe player in the world, calls Bolokada “A brilliant and entertaining performer, a patient and precise teacher, and as one of the few masters of his instrument. Few others are able to captivate his audience as he does, an even fewer are able to clearly and concisely teach this music.”
